100 year old plaster crucifix

I was hired to fix up an old Catholic crucifix for a church in Hancock Mi. The story behind it is that it had hung in the original Catholic church in downtown Hancock, near the first hospital and school, which were located between Finlandia's Old Main and the Hancock Middle School. The crucifix was then taken and stored in an attic, then when the Church of the Resurrection was constructed, it was re-donated and stored in their attic for 20+ years. Now they took it down and want it made presentable so that it can be hung once again for the 150th Jubilee of the Catholic Church in Hancock.

Here are some pictures what the cross looked like when I got it, and my progress to the finished thing. Later tonight or tomorrow I will have a picture of it hung in the church completely finished.

A 4 foot statue of St. Anne is next.

One Issue of Life

I was looking through an issue of Life Magazine from the 70's and I noticed it seemed like 1 of every 3 ads were for cigarettes. So I cut them all out and made this.

Good News!

So I applied for a scholarship to get my new book published along with copyright and ISBN, AND I got it! So, soon books will be available. The files and everything are on the way to the printers and hopefully, by mid-summer, books will be born!

BOOKS ARE IN!

Hey!
I haven't posted anything here for a while because of my final senior project, which I have described in previous posts but I'll tell you again. Its a book about a WW2 veteran and his struggles through his post-war life.

Mostly what I wanted this post to be for was a declaration! I'm super excited to announce that a few of my dumby books came in they look really good. I'll be making a few corrections and re-ordering them, but if anyone is interested, sometime in the late spring I should have some for sale!
I'll keep you updated and here is a picture of the book!

An Old Collage!

Hey. I just found this online at the Ironwood's Daily News site. It's the first collage that I had seriously messed around with. Its about 20"x25" and is on a wooden panel that I had originally started painting a Popeye the Sailor Man on, along with some figure drawings from a life drawing class, and it all just ended up being this. I entered it in the Finlandia University Juried Exhibition a couple of years ago. Maybe 2009?  It won 1st place in the mixed media category.

This is the photo from the exhibition. It was part of a slide show so I wouldn't be surprised if it started changing into other images. Sorry if it does.

The Camp

My Great Grandma Siller's camp is a very special place to members of my family. My brother and I basically grew up on Lake Gerald in the summer. There we went fishing, boating, drove around in the woods, shot guns, learned to start fires, had family dinners, etc. And before us our family had been doing the same things there for 50 years. So to make a little poster about the camp doesn't fully illustrate my feelings for it, but I thought I would make a little poster anyways to frame and hang on the wall there. Here it is and my process for making it. Hope you like it.

Gangs Of New York

Here is a poster I had started for an Illustration class a few years ago. I had it started pretty well with the characters drawn in and the US flag back ground and buildings but no lettering, so a few months ago i picked it up again and added in the "Gangs of New York."

A Collage

I had been putting this collage together for over the course of a year or so. It was just a large canvas in my studio that I glued/painted/taped/screwed/etc. things to as i found them.
Its a collection of brief histories of the area and the impact and change that occured after the closing of the copper mines and railroad industries in the Copper Country (as a community and on personal levels). I worked on this piece until I was asked to display it as a piece in the Traveling Journal Exhibition at the Reflection Gallery where I was actually able to sell it.

A Little Photography: 1965 Chevy Impala

Here are a few photos I took of my good friend Kevin's 1965 Chevy Impala. We took them under the D&N parking deck in Hancock. The mixture of it being night time and the lighting came together well and we were able to take, what I thought, were some pretty cool pictures of a very cool car. Hope you enjoy.

BUICKS

So, I have been a bit negligent to this blog lately. BUT i have been working on some art work lately, and alot of that art work has been my exploration into working on vintage ads for cars! I dont have much of an interest in cars other than the style of advertisements used on them in the previous years, so drawing them sounded "ok" to me but nothing i really wanted to pursue. It seemed like something would just be hard and frustrating... so I figured I would just do it. Well, I liked it alot. I had started on a 1938 Buick a while back and finally, after finishing it I did a 1928 buick and 1952 buick road master. Here are some pictures of those pieces.

First journal Entry

I did the first journal entry for the traveling journal. here it is. im almost done with the rest.

This is from an picture of my great grandma and her husband and my biological great grandpa Fred. He died long before i was born but he served in World War 2 and I have always been exposed to what he was like. He a strong, good, honest man. He was in the war and then came home and began to work as a crane operator. He died of a heart attack while cutting wood.

The next entry i will post will be over her next husband, Gameel also known to ever one as Ted. He was my grandpa since i was born, and one of the nicest guys i have ever met, and almost anyone that knew him would say the same thing. He served in World War 2 in the motorcade.

Traveling Journal

We have decided to begin a Traveling Journal Entitled "War." Through it we will be recording the stories, images, and emotions of the ways that 5 very different people have been exposed to war.

Bosch Beer

My newest project has been to work on a 2 page spread about a brief history of the Bosch Beer Corporation, the Copper Countries 2nd largest and most productive corporation 2nd only to the Copper Industry. It is a particular interest to me and i enjoy collecting things left behind from what it once was. i created this simple cover using the later logo of Bosch Beer that i took from a cardboard case that i have.

The wooden back ground with silk screen looking image logo i used to give a look of a warm cozy bar that sat on the edge of the highways, like so many bars that i remember as a child but only a few now are left such as Jakes Bar outside of Twin Lakes, Mi. i remember at least 2 or 3 on the way there and only that one remains now.

The quote on the bottom of the cover is from a former employee of the Bosch Brewery.
